Danny and Tate are a gay couple living in Los Angeles, USA. But Danny’s conservative mother in Taipei continues to exert pressure over his life, including her desire for a traditional family and a grandchild. To both appease his mother, and for himself, Danny decides to try for a baby through surrogacy. Along the way he runs into problems with surrogate agencies, Tate’s insecurities about becoming a father, and his mother’s meddling in every aspect of the process. Reminiscent of Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet, Barney Cheng’s (who also plays Danny) Baby Steps is a story of family and reconciliation, and the strength of love in overcoming generational differences.
